The Dawn of the Piano Trio: Beethoven’s Building Blocks

Curated in 2022 as part of a special project supported by the Continuo Foundation, these concerts chart the evolution of the piano trio, from its emergence in the mid-18th century through to Beethoven’s complex and mature realisation of the genre.

Performed on historical instruments, the programmes feature rarely performed works by JC ‘London’ Bach, CPE Bach and Clementi, alongside the better known trios by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The concerts illuminate Beethoven’s trios in the context of works by other composers, preceding and contemporaneous, exploring how his ground-breaking writing would have been perceived at the time.

The Trio are grateful to the Continuo Foundation for making this project possible. The concerts are now available for tour, as a set of 3 or individually.
